Today was my arm training day at the gym, but at the request of the lovely Mel I decided to swap the gym for a rock wall. So we headed along to Extreme Edge here in Hamilton. The girl who looked after us was lovely and we felt really comfortable heading up the wall and belaying the other person. Now I was one of those kids who could NEVER climb the rope in PE, I've always been a little nervous when it comes to clambering over rocks and things also, so this was a major for me. Glad to say it was actually kinda easy (ish) and I certainly got the arm workout I was looking for.
Mel and I discovered two other very important things about the rock wall:
- It's great for anyone who may have trust issues, as it provides an awesome exercise in trusting your partner with your safety and safely lowering you to the ground.
- It's also awesome for anyone who is a little self conscious, anxious or fearful, as climbing even a few feet makes you feel quite empowered, and once you can go a few feet on the first try - chances are you'll go higher on the next go.
Exercise that makes you feel good along with achieving results is powerful for confidence, motivation and stickability.
So anyway, Mel and I made it to the top of a few walls, crumbled on a couple but all in all had a great time, and I am now well and truly over the horror of not being able to climb the rope in Phys Ed class.
Extreme Edge is at 90 Greenwood Street. Check out their website here.
